Plasma Technical Information

Plasma TV

Why do the call it a plasma?
For the past 75 years, the vast majority of televisions have been built around the same technology: the cathode ray tube (CRT). They work just fine, but there’s one serious drawback: CRTs are big and bulky. Plasma TVs create big, widescreen images but are only a fraction of a CRT TV’s size.

The way plasma TVs work is really cool. The basic idea is to have a million or so tiny glass cells embedded in the TV screen.  Each is filled with a gas, and has a phosphor coating.  When electricity energizes the gas, it fires the phosphor that emits the red, green, or blue light that makes up the picture we see. Of course this is simplified, but it’s the basic technology that drives all plasma TVs.

Are all Plasmas Hi-Def?
Nowadays, all plasmas are Hi-Def. What does that mean? Simply, it means the plasma panel contains at least 768 vertical and 1280 horizontal pixels (the individual plasma cells).  That’s an incredible number of pixels. When assembled together, those pixels give images the kind of detail and clarity that today’s customer is looking for.

What? You want something even better? No problem. 1080p resolution plasma TVs are here, and they’re amazing. 1080p combines 1080 vertical and 1920 horizontal pixels for the highest form of Hi-Def available today. Match up one of these TVs with a new Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD player and you have the ultimate in video. Come in to any of our stores and see just how great these TVs are for yourself.
